Deco + Dogs at The Deco Ball – Photos from Bella Rose
THE DECO BALL at Wrightsville Manor Presented by Kusek Financial Group Event Producer : Jess James Event Planning: Gather Events NC Photography: Bella Rose Photography This enchanted event, my sixth annual event inspired by the joie de vivre, design & decadence of the Jazz Age era, came to life October 13th. When my friend Helen asked what my favorite moment was from The Deco Ball, two things came to mind: the arrival of the puppies from Animal Avengers (our charity partner) AND the moment artist Michael J. Kowalski of Ice Sensations unveiled his masterpiece Deco Ball ice sculpture! For me,...

Looking back at That 70’s (Gucci) Show from Swinging London
Model Caroline Simpson takes a graceful spill while modeling on roller skates at That 70’s (FASHION) Show presented by Simply Noelle & produced by Jess James May 12th at Scooters Roller Rink Shannon Dunne, Amy Hammond, Jess James, Carly Forman, Kirsten Gravely   It’s exactly one week past the fashion show I’ve been envisioning the past five months – That 70‘s (FASHION) Show inspired by Gucci S/S 2016. I spent the next few days returning clothing from the show, organizing the pre-show choas left in the wake of Shannon and I’s marathon styling session and back-to-back closet consults with new...

Travel Diary: Road Trip inside the Deep South
Shack-Up Inn / Clarksdale, MS (Photo: Joel Finsel) The morning of my Southern road trip into the Deep South, I woke up to find Joel wide awake trance-like lying next to me. He said he vividly recalled the end of his dream with an urgent voice repeating in his ear, “Go to Nashville, Go to Nashville.” While he visited his boss to let him know he wouldn’t be able to drive to NYC later that week after all, I packed his bag (perks of having a live-in stylist) and walked Dakota to Dogs at Play. It was time for an...

Front Row Coverage from Puerto Rico Fashion Week with Trish McEvoy
With Roxanna and Susannah of Trish McEvoy at Puerto Rico Fashion Week Hola! I’m back from Puerto Rico and it was just as dreamy as Susannah promised. Last week, I drove to Charleston to connect with Angharad, the Media Director for Charleston Fashion Week. I brought her a few options from Style Girl Vintage and was excited to hear she ended up wearing a blue polka dot dress to the luncheon with Fern Mallis (creator of New York Fashion Week). Before taking in the finale evening of the 8th Charleston Fashion Week I joined the Trish McEvoy makeup team to...

Style Profile with my BFF – From Sartorialist to Simplifying in South Korea
Portrait of Helen Howell Priest in Downtown Raleigh Photo by Jess James You may recognize Helen as one of Island Passage’s golden Calendar Girls from year’s past. Perhaps you spotted her daydreaming while walking to her apartment downtown (she never had a driver’s license while living here). Hell, there’s a really good chance she pinched your baby’s cheeks or cooed over your bulldog’s overbite. Even though she has not called Wilmington home for the past six years, chances are if you met Helen, you wouldn’t soon forget her innocent spirit, girlish laugh or genuine kindheartedness. She was one of my...

The Real Deal: Making Tintype Magic + NYE Plans at Manna!
Tintype portrait of our favorite Wilmywood Starlet by Harry Taylor / Hair: Steven Ward Styling: Jess James / Makeup: Garnett Graham Instead of focusing on Christmas craziness, I thought we would look ahead to the New Year and make plans to celebrate together. Considering my face was drenched in tears after taking a peek at my personal Year in Review on Facebook, I will take the advice of my old friend Bill McIlwain with a smile, “Onward, Upward.” 2014, let’s do this. In planning for Manna’s upcoming New Year’s Eve bash with a 1940’s theme (click HERE to get your...

Best mod boots for fall: These boots are made for walking!
It started with the almost perfect-but-not-quite flat boots I found at Clothes Mentor. Subconsciously, the sleek modern shape and low block heel was already in my periphery before I realized it was actually “on trend.” The boot at Clothes Mentor was a wee bit too tight and the buckle on the side a tad too big and silver. I imagined finding the ideal – something close to the little black vintage Beatles boots my friend Helen scored on Etsy and wore religiously during my visit to Birmingham a few years back. I inspected pages of vintage black boots on Etsy...

Meet the Models for Saturday's Fall Fashion Preview + Social Chic
We are appraoching my first-ever event on a Saturday night this weekend. I’m ready for a party. How about it, Wilmington? This will be our third Fall Fashion Preview presented by Wilmington Dermatology Center at Blue Hand Home and we have a few new moves in store. Most importantly, this is a community-based event that brings together women (and men! We even have our first male model this year) of all ages to empower creative expression and to prove you really can “make (the trends) work” for at any age. Wondering who you will see on the runway this time?...
