SG *FASHION FIX* – TREND: Did You Know It’s In Style to be Patriotic? + Social Chic
Style Girl’s intern Michael Deininger-Bell with his Fresh & Precious blog partner Courtney McGovern showing off their Americana style.   Even when Memorial Day was a few months away, did you notice stars and stripes are having a bit of a moment? Separately (stars. stripes.), that’s not all that surprising. Same goes with the red, white and blue combination. Every year when the sunshine calls, we see the “summer on the French Riveria” type of vibe, but I’m talking about in-your-face America. Get this. It’s actually kind of in style to be patriotic.   (Click HERE to see “60 Hot Hipster Girls...

*FASHION FIX* Social Chic: Wilmington Works It (on + off the runway) for Wishes
Malia McCarthy brigtens up the runway in an outfit from Monkee’s at last Thursday’s fashion show at Wine, Women & Shoes benefiting Make-A-Wish. Photo: Matt Dols   Last year, I was contacted by Make-A-Wish in Raleigh about an event they were planning on bringing to Wilmington. They expressed interest in promoting their event Wine, Women & Shoes in the FASHION FIX. I was excited to hear about the concept: fashion show, shopping, wine and most memorably, “Shoe Guys” that basically “serve” and sell shoes from local boutiques to raise money for a cause close to all our hearts,...

*FASHION FIX* – Highlights from Charleston Fashion Week + Spring Preview Video
Hey y’all! I’m writing this week’s FASHION FIX in Charleston via Austin. I came right from Austin’s SXSW wearing bohemian maxis and denim shorts to full-on glam at Charleston Fashion Week. As you can imagine, that was some intense packing! Six hours of deliberation and accessorizing, but who’s counting?   I promise we will resume our Top 10 essentials for Spring via the Spring Fashion Preview (watch the event video below) along with festival attire (the good along with the very bad) from Austin.   For now, I skipped tonight’s after party  to share with you a few highlights from Night #1...

Last Thursday, there were far more fashionistas in Blue Hand Home than home furnishings.  In celebration of the annual FASHION FIX Spring Fashion Preview presented by Wilmington Dermatology Center, Tracy and Arnie transferred couches, dining tables, textured rugs and a menagerie of interior accents to a home they are staging to make room for a runway and a variety of pop-up shops from Wilmington’s favorite boutiques and designers.   For the next several weeks, I will share with you the Top 10 Trends for Spring we previewed that evening, starting with NEON worn to perfection by model Ozlem Nichols. This ALC “caution...

SG *FASHION FIX* Style Girl Photo Shoot + Social Chic from Founders Gala
Style Girl Jess James | Fashion Fix       Since the Style Girl Vintage Collection now has a home both downtown at aMuse Artisanal Finery (19 South 2nd Street) and at Tickled Pink at Lumina Station, my intern (sometimes referred to as Brad to my Rachel) Michael Deininger-Bell texted me over the holidays, “Pleasssse can we take some pictures?” So, the Style Girl / FASHION FIX team (Michael, a talented emerging photographer and Juliana, my trusted do-it-all girl Friday) invaded Tayloe Gray’s new office space downtown, which was once akin to a Madame Tussaud’s take on the African safari now in transition from former...

SG *FASHION FIX* – Style Girl’s Got a Brand New Bag!
Style Girl Jess James | Fashion Fix       Pour la Victoire handbags featured in Gilt Groupe’s sale.    I’ve never been one to subscribe to the whole IT bag obsession. There are the classics – the Louis, Coach and the quilted Chanel. Or for some style girls, it’s all about the latest Balenciaga or Alexander Wang. Handbags, along with coats and shoes, are typically seen as investment items since you get the most cost-per-wear out of them. And if you find “the one,” it may just become one of your signature staples. Hell, there’s even a website ( Bag, Borrow 0r Steal)...

SG *FASHION FIX* – Top 10: New Year’s in NYC
Style Girl Jess James | Fashion Fix     Outside Barney’s “Lady Gaga’s Workshop” entrance I spontaneously made my way to NYC a few days before New Year’s after receiving an urgent message from Alisa, a NYC-based styling client I worked with while I was in the city in September during Fashion Week, thanks to my dear friend Rachel Mcpherson. Alisa wanted to surprise her fiance Vic with a Style Girl shopping package for Christmas so I packed my bags, booked my ticket on the Bolt bus from Jersey and spent the next five days ringing in the New Year.   Here’s the Top 10...

SG *FASHION FIX* – Eye Spy Style Girl in glasses (even out on the town!)
Style Girl Jess James | Fashion Fix       At home, wearing my new Barton Perreira glasses     I was in sixth grade at the height of my middle school popularity (pre-”Zit City” as my sister christened my most awkward years) and saw my “social life” flash before my eyes. I cried as we drove away from my eye doctor’s office clutching my eyeglass case, which held the dreaded maroon Sally Jessy Rapheal-style glasses. I couldn’t believe I had crossed over to the other side. I was now a kid with glasses. My mom stressed that I should wear them whenever my teacher writes...

SG *FASHION FIX* – Style Profile Video: Meet Jewelry Designer Maggie Orli
Style Girl Jess James | Fashion Fix             When Lynn at Ziabird told me jewelry designer Maggie Orli was coming to town for a trunk show, I knew I had to meet her. Taking note of my fondness for Maggie’s raw stones and handcrafted details in her jewelry, Lynn often points out Maggie’s newest pieces along with updates on her extensive and often exotic travels.   With her jewelry in eclectic boutiques across the country,  as well as stockists in England, Indonesia, Holland, Thailand, Sweden and Australia, I was surprised to find out that Maggie actually grew up right here in Wilmington....
