As I made my way toward the runway during Charleston Fashion Week, the sway of swishing multi-colored beaded fringe captivated my attention. There before me was one of my favorite looks from the entire week – a lightweight, linen ivory summer vest – worn by a PYT in line for a cocktail. From the front, it appeared a somewhat understated summer essential. From the back came the surprise. As she made a slightly exaggerated turn, the long suede pieces covered in iridescent blue beads, danced before my eyes.
I had to ask – “Where did you get this?” She responded, “Oh, in Birmingham at a boutique called Swank.”
Lucky enough for me, I was heading to the ‘Ham the following week for one of my best friend’s weddings. Swank, here I come!
From the toe-grazing Jil Sander fringed mini-dress featured in the pages of Vogue to the more casual Phillip Lim fringed tunic at Beanie + Cecil, the fringe has firmly returned. Now’s the time to decide on flapper fringe or prairie princess.

To work this look into your spring wardrobe, try:
1) Remembering a little goes a long way. If you’re wearing a fringed top or dress, stick with clean lines and simplistic accessories.
2) Adding a touch of fringe with a pair of fringed gladiators or a fringe-trimmed handbag.
3) When wearing suede fringe, add at least one other natural element or texture, such as feather earrings, to add some boho cred.
4) Give fringe a fresh take with a cotton floral print like Jessie Williams’ new handmade “Pocahontas” dress, $115 at Edge of Urge. Add a denim jacket and cropped boots for a walk on the wilder side.
