Style Story: It all started with a Vintage Lavender Dress
front

Model: Hannah Johnston

It all started with a muted lilac dress in bloom with the palest pink roses. It has the demure charm of a 1930’s dress – from the midi length to the pleated peplum and the delicate, romantic print.

When I gave her a new home inside the lavender walls of the Style Girl Vintage showroom, I sent a photo to Photographer Ethan Gaskill letting him know I may have found the dress to inspire the collaborative shoot we had alluded to the last time we saw each other at the Oliver holiday party.

We knew we wanted to feature model Hannah Johnston, who has worked with Ethan countless times and had recently reached out to me about working together.

With Hannah’s Old Hollywood beauty, we knew we wanted a retro influence but at the same time, a timeless sensibility with cinematic drama.

Mid-way through shooting the lavender dress, the sky opened up and we dashed for cover in the showroom to prepare for Hannah’s second look – a look inspired by a 60’s inspired VOGUE shoot featuring one of our favorite models, Lara Stone. I dressed Hannah in a pale ice blue cashmere twinset (the ultimate sweater girl) with a sexy Valentino gray pencil skirt, my Nana’s pillbox hat and a silver mink stole. Makeup artist Tess Cash of Meraki Beauty gave her a smoky, dramatic cat eye (always my favorite!) and a nude pout while Hair Stylist Elizabeth Peterson (Blush) dialed in the Hollywood Starlet with soft cascading curls, part Veronica Lake, part Bardot.

Hannah brought along her friend Anna, who was visiting from out-of-town. Anna came bare-faced and casual, prepared to tag along for the day. Before long, Ethan and I encouraged her to try a few things on and soon enough, we convinced her to make her modeling debut. We loved the contrast of her undone beauty, but wanted to add a quirky element so I made a run to A Second Time Around to borrow some vintage gold eyeglasses.

Poised with our umbrellas and staring out at the warm globes inside Kilwin’s ice cream shop behind sheets of rain, we made a run for Joel’s vintage 1985 Mercedes. For our finale shot, we took refuge at one of our favorite vintage landmarks, Hughes Bros. Tires. Steamy windows, wet fur, girlie giggles with a little magic in between ensued. Take a look. And, please make your appointment to shop Style Girl Vintage with me soon.

Hope to see you tonight at A Second Time Around and at the Oliver sale this weekend! xo
