Sharing my Checklist for my 8th Charleston Fashion Week

You might be hard pressed to find another person (besides this Style Girl) who has attended every night at Charleston Fashion Week since its inception eight years ago (ok, MAYBE Chelsie Ravenell. But, that’s a maybe.) Back then, guests were more likely to wear a gingham sundress than Gucci and a”blog” was just a buzz word, perhaps a passing phase for people who liked to spend a little too much time in front of their computers. My, how times have changed.

Charleston Fashion Week has since become one of the premier fashion weeks in North America featuring “High Fashion in the Low Country”(my headline in my Style Girl column in the Star-News year 2) with more than 35 runway shows during this 5-night fashion celebration or “fashion bootcamp,” as Founder Ayoka Lucas affectionately called it in the early years.

I’m headed back next week for my 8th Charleston Fashion Week but am taking a detour to Puerto Rico with the Trish McEvoy makeup team to help launch their new store in San Juan with a mini version of my Spring Fashion Preview (it’s returning to Wilmington April 22nd at Bakery 105 – get your ticket HERE). While in PR, Susannah (my friend and Trish’s regional director) will be taking in several shows at Puerto Rico Fashion Week.

After a little magic, makeup and sunshine, I will anticipate my return to Charleston to take in the weekend festivities. Here’s a cheat sheet of what I am most looking forward to at the 8th annual Charleston Fashion Week:

1 — Wilmington Fashion Designer Casey Crespo (whose amazing leggings you may recall seeing in the FASHION FIX (read profile here) or on the runway at a past Fashion Preview event) has succeeded in funding her recent Kickstarter campaign to take her designs to “the next level” for her debut at Charleston Fashion Week. Of her Fall 2015 collection, Casey says: “I aim to capture the mysterious, ethereal nature of the moon with a collection that replicates the lunar cycle. My palette is restricted to the colors of the moon and night sky, and each design is inspired by a different phase. Expect floaty, eco-friendly knits like bamboo, modal, and organic cotton, as well as original prints like a funky kaleidoscopic rendering of the lunar surface.” Local jewelry designer Kristin Wood of Kopious Jewelry has created custom pieces to accompany Casey’s 8-12 looks. Kopious Jewelry will be for sale in the Style Lounge on Thursday night. Don’t miss Casey’s show Friday March 20th.

2 — Trina Turk (whose designs will be featured in the Belk fashion show Thursday at 7pm) founded her women’s contemporary line in 1995 by with her husband, photographer Jonathan Skow. Trina Turk has evolved into an iconic lifestyle brand, celebrating California style with eleven annual collections of chic women’s ready-to-wear and accessories, plus swimwear, recreation/activewear, a Mr. Turk menswear line, residential décor and textiles, footwear, handbag and jewelry collections. Trina is also an avid vintage collector, a woman after my own heart. I received a mini wooden hanger clipped to an invite from Belk for a meet-and-greet with Trina. Sadly, I won’t be in town Thursday to attend, but am hoping she will stick around through the weekend so I have the chance to see her. I have a feeling she will be wearing something fabulous!

3 — Emerging Designer Johanna Hickey is a Savannah-based fashion designer who is one of two parts of Point Line & Plane along with designer Orea Guthrie. I met Johanna through Flannery Cronin, Gay Adair’s daughter, who graduated from SCAD with Johanna. I stayed at their apartment a few times in Brooklyn and had the pleasure of getting to spend some time with Johanna, who definitely walks to the beat of her own drum. Johanna: “I prefer to sport the look of a high-fashion bag lady who fell asleep in the subway.”

Since I will be in Puerto Rico Tuesday night, I am crossing my fingers that Johanna and Orea make it to the final round Saturday night so I will get a chance to see their debut collection on the runway.

On their Fall 2015 Collection: “Our primary goal is to create sustainable fashion using ethically and environmentally sound methods. With this in mind, we use exclusively natural fibers—silk gauze, hand-felted wool roving, and hand-dyed cotton—and place special emphasis on craft.”

4 — Amsale, this year’s Featured Designer at the Spring Bridal Show Saturday morning, is internationally renowned for fusing classic with current to create the perfect balance of timelessness and modernity in her couture bridal and eveningwear. Her gowns have been seen regularly on the red carpet, on the Oprah Winfrey Show and even her own reality show, Amsale Girls. I have been guilty of skipping the bridal component of CFW after a week of working and playing a little too hard. But this year, with Amsale as top billing, I will grab a mimosa under the tents Saturday morning, stay AWAKE and carry on!

5 — Louise Roe, one of this year’s emcees and fashion finale judges on Saturday night, is an English TV presenter and fashion journalist currently based in LA. You may recognize her from her red carpet coverage for Access Hollywood. As an admitted Anglophile, she has been on my radar for some time now. She is the host of Plain Jane on MTV International (in its 4th season) as well as TLC’s new series Style by Jury. In 2013, Roe also hosted NBC’s hit competition show, Fashion Star, and co-hosted Style network’s first-ever LIVE show, Style Pop.
