SUMMER ESSENTIALS - for Now & Later

There’s an incessant whisper of fall in the fashion world. Twenty new style rules for fall from Net-a-Porter.com, Who What Wear says it’s all about red leather, Vogue is championing maxi skirts and capes.
All this talk of fall with a 105 heat index! Let’s simmer down for just a moment. I decided to reach out to some of the folks in the style community for some tips on how we can keep our cool now in the heat of
the summer, but take the same fashion & beauty direction into the fall. Bring on the heat.

FASHION

The Chambray Shirt.

This one works for girls and the guys.

NOW: J.Crew chambray shirt

LATER: Current/Elliott denim/chambray shirt from Net-a-porter.com

“Wear it open to add some weight to a summer tank and a pair of shorts.
In the fall, button it all the way up, add a statement necklace layered
on top and a blazer or simply, belt it!

The Shirtdress.

Troubadour “Diana”
dress has a cut-out detail on the sleeves and is offered in white or
navy. If you’re interested in the “Diana,” email

“An easy, versatile dress that can be styled up or down depending on
the occasion and can easily transition into fall with a pair of
leggings or tights.”

- Lindsey Carter, Troubadour Fashion Designer

BEAUTY

All summer, the side braid has been the rage thanks to Alexander Wang. Hair Stylist Cheryl Kent (Style Girl’s hair stylist for the past 5 years) says, “Let’s give the Side Bun its moment in the sun.”

TOOLS:

* hot rollers

* rubber band

* couple of bobby pins

* Redken humidity control hairspray

DIY:

1) Use hot rollers to give your hair body and wave.

2) Pull your hair into a low ponytail towards the side of the nape of your neck.

3) Twist hair around into a bun and pin it into place.

4) Make sure a few sexy strands hang around your face for a softer, more sultry look.

Voila! Fab summer ‘do.

Cheryl has created variations
of the side bun look for two of Style Girl’s social events (first Sex
and the City party and The Cucalorus Oscars Party).

*** And, I’m excited to share that I finally know how to do a fishtail braid thanks to this tutorial video.

Cheryl’s Summer Essential Hair Products:

1) 100% Argon Oil

An omega 6 antioxidant (= hair healthy) product from Morraco that helps to battle frizz and keeps your hair silky and shiny.

2) Lavender Water

“This is a secret weapon for gals with curly hair! It boasts curls without the crunch.” Click HERE to read how to make your own Lavender Water.

3) Dry Shampoo

When the sun is shining, no one wants to be stuck inside blow-drying
and styling their hair. To ensure your blowout lasts as long as
possible, try Au Naturel Dry Shampoo ($23).

FACE

Style Girl’s Pick -

For lightweight coverage that offers a flawless complexion while
improving the health and appearance of your skin, I prefer GloMinerals
GloPressed base powder, which combines natural high-pigment minerals
and antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E and green tea extract).

Available at Glo MedSpa and Wilmington Plastic Surgery.

LASHES

Style Girl’s Pick -

For those of us not blessed with mile-long lashes, Latisse provides a
pain-free alternative to eyelash extensions and, it works! Selling over
1.5 million bottles nationwide, it’s the first and only FDA approved
prescription treatment to help grow longer, fuller lashes.

Available at Wilmington Plastic Surgery and Glo MedSpa.

RODARTE READY

Style Girl’s Pick -

Heading into fall, MAC will release its latest “Juarez” collection in
collaboration with the high-fashion label Rodarte, inspired by the
Mexican factory town of Juarez and pieces from their current collection.

Sidestepping controversy brought on by the line’s affiliation with
factory workers, MAC pledged to send $100,000 to a still-unnamed
charity to benefit the Juarez community.

Former Wrightsville Beach hipster and illustrator Brian Matzke (and FASHION FIX reader) was snapped by Fashionista.com while he was waiting in the iPhone 4 queue (wrapped around 3 blocks) in Soho - for 6+ hours!

Wear: Dress and necklace from Aqua Fedora

Spotted: Robin Clarke

Where: Tift Merritt Concert at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater

Wear: Forever 21 tank and
ring from Forever 21, Shorts from Charlotte Russe, Sandals from Island
Passage, Fedora from Julie’s Boutique, Necklace from Sterling House and
Bracelet from Francesca’s.

During a torrential downpour and thunderstorm at Tift’s
concert at Greenfield Lake, she promised the crowd she would sing one
last song - without any electricity (no speakers, no band and no mic).
Luckily, my parasol worked as an umbrella so we got a small snippet of
Tift (and her wet, adoring fans - including my Mom who you can hear
louder than Tift herself) singing in the rain…

Mad Men - Season 4

Tune In: Mad Men returns this Sunday! Join Don Draper and the gang to
see who gets the promotion, who is sleeping with who and of course, who
is wearing what!

Check out Lesley M. Blume’s column in the Huffington Post where
she declares a return to the late 50’s / early 60’s - a time when
pearls were the statement accessory of choice, where colleagues
indulged in 3-martini lunches and women did not step foot outside
without their lipstick.
