MEET ME AT THE
JAZZ AGE LAWN PARTY
Ever since I started hosting the Great Gatsby Gala at The City Club four years ago, I longed to don my 20’s finery to lounge and frolic in the grass (with my St. Germain cocktail in hand) at The Jazz Age Lawn Party held twice a year (June and August) on Governor’s Island.
Hosted by Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra and selected by The New York Times as one of the most memorable events of 2011 and 2012, The Jazz Age Lawn Party offers a magical opportunity to travel back in time.
Lamenting to Milliner Jan Wutkowski last August that I had missed the Lawn Party once again, she insisted we make a pact that we would not miss it this year and even better, we would go together! We shook on it, and now the time has come. These two North Carolina based flappers are headed to New York City for a roaring good time!
Naturally, I have a variety of flapper looks from past Gatsby Galas that are the bee’s knees, but since this event takes place outdoors and all day, it’s more of a challenge to find a balance between flapper decadence and picnic panache.
I’ve shared some of my favorite images culled online from begone Jazz Age Lawn Parties along with a few options on what I might wear. If you have a moment, please tell me which look you prefer. In a few weeks, I will share Jan and I’s first adventure & inspiration from the lawn!
MARK YOUR CALENDAR,
Great Gatsby Gala
presented by Kusek Financial Group
returns Thursday, September 18th
at City Club of Wilmington
This dress is missing the signature drop waist but it’s soft, feminine and I think even Daisy Buchanan would agree that it’s perfect for a picnic. Now, there’s the matter of what to wear with it to give it that twenties pizazz.
Paired with a 1930’s fringed piano shawl,
a pink lace cocoon jacket or
perhaps my 1920’s hand-painted peach kimono?
do I rev up the glamour with my authentic 1920’s
beaded tunic that is on its way to retirement?
Worn with my ostrich half boa to camoflauge its growing hole.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
