Did you miss me last Friday?
I am contemplating taking the FASHION FIX bi-weekly with the launch of my new website (hopefully coming soon) and figured last Thursday was a good time to test drive the concept since I spent over 12 hours in the car that day, basically on a whim. It was one of those days when two friends asked for a favor, one of which involved a spontaneous road trip to a city I’ve never been. And both involved another sleepless Thursday, clocking out at 4am, in typical newsletter night fashion.
I accompanied my friend Simon for a modeling audition in Atlanta. Both first-timers, we made it just in time for his call-time (well, sorta) and grabbed some barbeque at Fox Bros. before getting back in the car again for another 6 hours. Arriving home at 3:30am, I rested for 45 minutes before driving my friend Kelly to the airport to catch her flight to New York City.
I guess you could say I met my good deed quota for the day. Which brings me to my new favorite t-shirt – the “Giving Back is the New Black” tee, which is brand spankin’ new to Half United’s growing collection.
I interviewed Carmin Black (Fighting Hunger Through Fashion – Click HERE) in 2010 shortly after she and her brother Christian (both based in Wilmington) launched their company with the mission of donating HALF of the profits from every product sold directly towards fighting the global hunger epidemic.
With ties to TOMS and retail parternships with Nordstrom and Barnes & Noble and a nod from The Zoe Report, let’s just say HALF has come a long way, baby. Their signature bullet necklaces symbolizing their fight against hunger recently inspired their more glamorous Flourish jewelry collection (the Alba statement necklace is my personal fave, $140 = 12 meals!
Carmin shares, “After four and a half years of business we are so excited to diversify our products because the more we have to offer, the more we are able to give back.”
As a testament to this mission, HALF UNITED has given
over 115 thousands meals to children since 2010.
As for the “Giving Back is the New Black” tee, Half United teamed up with long-time “hunger fighter” and HU supporter Aly Silverio of Jawbreaking for the design. Her brand Jawbreaking was founded in 2008, when Aly was only 15. Since then, Half United’s Marketing Director Michael Ussery shares, “Aly has received support from major publications like Nylon and Cosmopolitan, as well as celebrity endorsements from every teenager’s obsession, One Direction.”
We all know how people love to throw around the catchphrase ‘the new black’ in regards to just about everything. Carmin reflects, ” Even a few years ago, it was ‘black is the new black’ and now of course there’s the hit Netflix show Orange is the New Black (who’s cast members recently received a care package with the new HU tees!) Basically, it’s the thing we all must-have, the ‘it’ item of the moment. And we hope that GIVING BACK becomes the new classic, the new way of thinking, the newest obsession, not just in fashion and #ootd’s, but in the lives of our customers, friends, and neighbors!”

And remember, half of your cost ($32) goes towards fighting hunger!
