gaining currency now as we  wait in anticipation to see what
Hurricane Earl might bring our way.

Luckily, it appears that Earl may flirt with the coast but he may just

1 ounce Light Rum (Bacardi White Label)

1 ounce Dark Rum (Myers)

1 ounce Simple Syrup (boiling hot water + sugar)

1.5 ounce pineapple

1.5 ounce orange juice

Fresh Lime Juice (half a lime)

3 dashes of Angostura Bitters

1/2 ounce Galliano (optional)

Shake & Strain over ice, Serve in a Tall Glass and Garnish with a lime wheel

So, I got a call this week from a new client looking for just the right
“je ne sais quoi” for her upcoming solo trip to Paris. She’s leaving
her husband and precocious daughter behind (for 10 whole days) and has
a rendezvous planned with a certain Irishman who has an affinity for
sunglasses at all hours of the day…okay, not quite. But, she is attending the U2 concert in The City of Lights.

After discussing her itinerary, we dove into her closet pulling all her
favorites pieces onto a rolling rack. Keeping wearability, wow
factor and the transitional nature of each item in mind, we edited the
selection down to the number of looks she can fit into her carry-on
luggage while consciously leaving room for any new finds she uncovers
on the streets of Paris.

We photographed a few variations of each look, accessorizing along the
way – bringing us to the most important question at hand – “What
shoes  to bring?” We settled on a pair of European-style black
sneakers with patent trim for all-day walking excursions hiking the
winding steps at Sacre-Coeur or touring the endless halls of The
Louvre, a potential pair of stacked heels (that work with or without
tights or ankle or over the knee socks) for an art opening or drinks at
The Buddha Bar, but decided we were still missing the besotted bootie.

That’s where the bootie call began! I’ve fallen madly for this season’s
lusted after lace-up bootie – some are made for walking and
others…not so much. What can I say? “J’adore.”

Finding the perfect dress is one thing, but swimwear can be an entirely
different story. Summer may be winding down but the heat is here to
stay – for at least enough time to find the ever elusive swimsuit
soulmate.

I like a touch of nostalgia in almost every aspect of my life so I often find myself searching for a retro style suit right
out of Beach Blanket Bingo. Over the years, I’ve uncovered quite a few
from a vintage collector’s stash, estate sales, eBay and even in my
Nana’s dresser drawer.

Although these vintage suits may be channeling some pin-up panache a la Rita Hayworth, the material is
often a bit too thick and heavy for a sticky, Southern day at the beach accessorized with an ungodly dose of humidity.

Enter my latest obsession – Marysia Swim’s 2011 collection, which debuted recently at Miami’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM. The Charleston-based designer Marysia Reeves hits the perfect note
between feminine and femme fatale with soft, subdued colors, retro
silhouettes, and feminine detailing.

Setting the stage for a 1930’s starlet frolicking on the sands of Fiji, Marysia’s modern
material and exquisite fit marks the sign of my swimsuit soulmate. Now,
if only I could choose just one….

Recessionista Rules to Swap by:

* Bring items that are still-stylish. How long ago did you purchase the item?

* Vintage is cool, but 6-9 seasons ago can be passé.
* The Style Swap brings out fashion lovers of all ages and all sizes. If
you feel more comfortable, bring two accessories instead (of one
clothing item and one accessory). Shoes, scarves and jewelry are a sure
bet!

* If the item still has tags on it, chances are it is in
mint condition. However, is there a reason it never saw the light of
day? If you cringe at the thought of wearing it, don’t bring it!

* If you shrank it in the dryer, ripped a hole in it or if it has any
stains that are impossible to get out, donate it or turn it into a rag.

*Bring something that you loved when you bought it. Maybe you never had the
right occasion to wear it, it didn’t quite fit right or you decided it
wasn’t your style after all.

* Give what you expect to receive. Bring items that are representative of an item you’d like to come home with.

If you end up with a bag of clothing to purge, bring it in a bag and Jess
will donate it for you! All untagged items, as well as donation items
(brought in shopping bags) will be donated to Bargain Box to benefit
The Good Shepherd Homeless Shelter.

With all the hype and intrigue surrounding Chelsea Clinton’s wedding
(last weekend in upstate New York) on which celebrities would attend
(no Oprah or Obama), the cost of the cake ($11,000) and the designer
wedding gown of choice (Vera Wang), it got me thinking about all the
brides-to-be out there currently on the hunt for their dream dress.

First of all, remind yourself that the hardest part is over. Most
importantly, you found your soulmate, the man of your dreams. Before
you get started, take a moment to visualize your wedding day. This is
the moment you share your love story with those who mean the most to
you. What are you wearing? There’s your first clue.

If you’re drawing a blank, don’t panic. Call on a trusted friend or a professional. Most people don’t realize that James + Dunne’s styling services do extend down the aisle. In working with a client or
a bride, one of the first questions we ask is, “How would you describe
your style?” You’d be surprised how many women feel they don’t have a
style – until we uncover it together. One of the best places to start
is taking a good look at your wardrobe and singling out your go-to
dress that makes you feel most comfortable and confident. This go-to
dress is often times the haute hint in determining which silhouette and
style wedding dress will look best on you.

Here are a few more tips from James + Dunne that we learned from our own stint as brides-to-be:

* Enjoy the thrill of the hunt. Even if you think you found “the one”
in the first shop or click of your mouse,  let this moment linger.
Grab your sister, your mom and your best friend and go on a bridal
boutique crawl – try on things you never imagined wearing, don a tiara
and let your mom have her happy cry.

* Accentuate your best features and downplay your flaws. Don’t feel
that you have to wear a strapless and keep in mind the importance of
creative altering. Add a cap sleeve, slimming darts or some lace to
downplay a plunging necklace.

* Your wedding is not the best time to try any radical experimentation
- especially when it comes to your makeup (see makeup artist Andrew Petersen’s beauty tips below). When you look back on this day in 20 years, you don’t want to cringe. Think timeless and elegant.

* Don’t drown in tradition. Who says you have to wear white? I searched
for weeks on end for the perfect wedding band, but couldn’t find
anything I felt didn’t detract from the simplistic beauty of my
solitaire. My husband-to-be smartly suggested I find a ring I love
instead. I’ve worn an antique aquamarine ring with a filigree setting
from the late 1800’s everyday since. Looking for something custom? Give

* Is your wedding budget dwindling with each click of your wedding
planner’s pen? Luckily, there are plenty of options for brides on a
budget from high-end consignment shops  and clearance sample sales
(like A Boxed Event’s “Running of the Brides”) to transitional evening dresses and designer dress rental services (RenttheRunway.com).

Once you say “Yes” to the Dress, we promise – everything else will
start to fall in place. From the design of your invitations, flowers,
cake, complementing bridesmaids dresses and overall event decor will
come to life inspired by the look, design and style of your dress, your
sartorial soulmate.

Beautiful Bride

“You may now kiss the bride.” These words have sounded in countless
women’s wedding-day dreams. But now that the moment at the altar is
fast approaching, they may have become something of a nightmare! Have
no fear: International makeup artist Andrew Petersen of Trish McEvoy (based in Charleston) has some test of time tips for flawlessly kissable lips.

Pucker Up

* Begin with a smooth, hydrated surface. “Two nights prior, dip a clean
mascara wand into your facial moisturizer and gently scrub your lips,
removing any dry or flaky skin,” says Andrew.

* After washing, apply a lip moisturizer containing shea butter and
vitamin E. “This ensures that when you wake on the morning of your big
day, your lips will be supple and prepped for the perfect pout,” he
suggests.

* Before lining your lips, start by adding a neutral primer to and
around the lips. “Always use a liner that matches the shade of your
lips so that, as the color wears off, you aren’t left with a line,”
Andrew advises. Follow the natural shape of your lips, then color in
the lines completely.

* Take a lip brush and fill in your lips with your chosen color. Make
sure to press a tissue over the lips, then reapply the color and blot
any excess once again.

Andrew’s favorite part of the process entails revisiting your lips with
liner to define and shape them perfectly. “Focus on the corners of the
mouth and the Cupid’s bow of the upper lip for a sexier look,” he says.
“And spice it up with a touch of shimmer gloss on the center of your
lower lip.”

* For the finale, trace the edges of your lined lips with a
powder-dipped brush. “This keeps lipstick from bleeding, covers any
mistakes, and frames the shape of your perfect lips.”

Luscious Lip Dos & Do nots

* DO go with pink: “It’s feminine, elegant, and romantic,” says Andrew.
And every bride out there, from the most natural to the most glamorous,
has a “perfect pink.” (It photographs well, too.)

* DO get the products from your makeup artist so you can touch up throughout the day.

* DO keep it simple. Your hubby-to-be wants to kiss you, not your lipstick.

* DON’T choose a darker color if you have small lips. Brighter shades make for a fuller-looking pout.

* DON’T be daring! You’ll be looking at these photographs for a long time.

Work It: How to keep your cool + look professional

In anticipating the sizzle of a
mid-summer day, it becomes easier to skimp on the formalities of professional, work-appropriate attire. As dress codes loosen and unemployment rates rise, you start to wonder, “What is the modern-day
power suit?”

No matter whether you’re employed, seeking employment or working for yourself, it’s paramount never to underestimate the first impression.
If you’re going for an interview, do your research not only on the company and the job responsibilities, but find out what the work
environment is like. Do the associates click down the halls in designer heels or is everyday casual Friday?

Foz, host of Wilmington’s most popular radio show on Z107.5, shared, “On my first interview at a radio station, I came in all buttoned up wearing a suit and tie. My potential boss (not in a suit) took one look
at me and said, ‘You look like you’re trying to sell me something.’”

* Pick out your outfit the night before and try everything on to make

3rd Annual “Arts for the Arts” Hair Fashion Show

This WWII era inspired show will feature cut and color styles, glamour,
avant-garde and fantasy hair pieces in an effort to raise money for the
downtown youth woodworking program, Kids Making It. Models will be
dressed by local designer Chanel Dupare with jewelry by Joanne Miranda
Designs.

There will be two shows: 1)  a VIP show with cocktail party, hors
d’oeuvres, gift bags, seating. 2) For the nightlife crowd with a dance
party to follow.

Last Friday, Monkee’s of Wilmington hosted the FASHION + FLASH Runway Show tented event at Lumina Station in honor of Alice + Olivia’s stop in Wilmington during their tour of the Southeast.

The A+O style team – Cleo, Molly and Diggy – arrived in style in their
retro Airstream and kick-started makeover madness, fashion + fun.
Makeover winners Kirsty Piper, Angie Fortuin and Lisa Nez were treated
to sparkling sequined Alice + Olivia outfits to rock the runway, along
with jewelry from S. Burke, hair cut, color and style from Lavish and makeup by Blush.

The fashion show, styled by “Style Girl” Jess James and Shannon Dunne of James + Dunne Styling, evoked a sexy, bohemian vibe inspired by Alice + Olivia’s retro 1970s  era Airstream capturing the troubadour spirit of a gypsy caravan. Lavish followed suit by adding layers of bed-head, Rapunzel locks offset
by a myriad of feathers while Blush gave the 14 head-turning models a
clean, fresh look with an electric pout. Monkee’s 30+ looks were
accessorized with additional statement pieces from Ziabird and REEDS Jewelers.

Paysage’s chandelier, leather chairs and whimsical quilts added panache to the tent while 19 Hundred and DJ Mitch Jones kept the well-dressed guests engaged with light bites and a little
Janis Joplin as the guests eagerly awaited the show. The 200+ guests
included not only Wilmington’s most stylish women from age 9 to 69 but
a fair share of men, including Architect Tilghman Herring,
who concluded, “Great fashion show – Beautiful women, clothes and
place, very enjoyable. Where else can a man look at pretty women and
when his wife observes him, she just smiles?” Gotta love it.

In celebration of those who possess great personal style and those who
appreciate it, I’m introducing a new segment into the “FASHION FIX” mix
called “Closet Confessions” where we explore the essence of a person by
taking an inside look at their closet, collections, memories and
favorite style musings.

I decided to start with one of my style inspirations, my 91-year-old
Nana, Anna Seaboldt. Due to her spunky nature, I fondly remember her telling us about the guy she “nailed over his head” with her high heel
after he tried getting fresh with her during her stint as a nanny in Brooklyn or the special cream blouse with gold cufflinks my grandfather
brought home for her during one of his trips abroad. And most memorably, her treasured mink cape she wore at her husband’s funeral
while her home was being robbed by a mobster and his girlfriend whom, she likes to add, ran off with her other fake mink.

As Alzheimer’s sets in, these memories have began to fade from my Nana’s conscious, but for a day, she slipped into one of her favorite
yellow knit suits, stepped inside her closet and tried her best to remember through the threads of time…
