Jess James interviews Stylemaker SCOTT AVETT, lead singer of The Avett Brothers, for MetroMix: Most people would agree there is a natural synergy between music and fashion. As a source of inspiration, they converge to produce both a soundtrack and a stage presence. Even so, it’s rare to interview a musician on matters of style instead of the meaning behind their songs. Scott Avett, front man of The Avett Brothers, often takes the stage in rugged, hard-working threads to keep up with the band’s raw, raucous energy. Take a closer look, though, and you’ll notice the distinctive details — the nuances of someone who puts careful thought into what he wears. The day I connect with Scott on the phone, I immediately take note of the changes since the last time we spoke in 2007. Instead of receiving an email with Scott’s cell number from longtime label Ramseur Records, our call is connected by Sony Music. In recording their latest album I and Love and You,  the trio inked with American Recordings, Columbia’s imprint through super producer Rick Rubin, who has worked with the likes of Johnny Cash, Jay Z and Justin Timberlake. Scott, a new father, juggled the phone and his 16-month-old daughter from his home in Concord, NC. I could imagine him chasing behind her as he smiled and said, “It’s too cold to be barefoot, child” pulling one sock on after the other while he told me about the outfit he was wearing for the Associated Press (AP) photo shoot later that afternoon: a Woolrich red flannel (“looks like something my dad used to wear”), brown cords and a henley. We talked about his fondness for red, and how he tries to stray from wearing brown pants with brown shirts. But before we deconstructed his closet, Avett shared his fashion philosophy: “If you are confident and comfortable and sure in what you have on, you convince others. Each person decides what is beautiful for themselves and that is the bottom line. The cliche is absolutely true. It’s not just a matter of what you’ll wear to the Azalea Festival Garden Party or The Junior League’s Kentucky Derby “Mint Julep,”
but what statement you want to make in your hat. No Garden Party look
is complete without a head-turning topper. If you don’t own a hat or
are in search of something custom-made, have no fear. Wilmington’s
favorite milliner Jan Wutkowski, who has trained and taught hat-making all over the world and was chosen as one of the top 30 hat designers in the country by Hat Life Magazine, is not only showcasing her custom creations but bringing in designs from other milliners across the country.

“The theme of the show is elegance with a twist. I want the attendees to
feel like they have stepped into a grand salon, a Parisian couture
house during a time where women came to the milliner to be pampered and
to shop in high style. It’s all about accessories - hats, vintage
jewelry, gloves. There is a sense of elegance and sophistication with a
bit of surprise in the way the models will be presented.”

Jan will not only have hats for women interested in traditional, wide brim
hats but also more avant garde hats with unexpected embellishment.
Europeans have been very influential in the resurgence of the fascinator  or what Jan likes to call “explosions on the head,”- a wonderful mass of color and movement in the form of feathers, jewels,
beading and appliques attached with combs and headbands that has taken
hold with the younger set.

At the event, Jan will also share some tips on finding your “Hattitude” such as:

DRESS OR HAT FIRST?

“My favorite customer selects her hat first and then the dress. She knows
what’s important!  This approach takes longer because it opens the
door to lots more options and decisions regarding color range, shape,
etc. but offers freedom of complete creativity.  If the dress
comes first, we can work from the silhouette, fabric, color and
complementing accessories.

‘FACE’ FACTS:

“In selecting your hat, keep your face shape in mind. Round faces should
steer away from extremely rounded crowns and downturned brims. Square
shapes should avoid boater crowns, and heart shapes should pass on
pixie or pointed crowns.” Women of a smaller stature, in many cases,
should wear a smaller profile hat. However, if a petite woman feels
confident in a larger hat, chances are her personality can carry it.”

THE LOOK:

“A hat should complement the ‘whole look’ of an ensemble. It doesn’t need
to be ‘matchy-matchy’ but should work with your outfit’s colors,
patterns, other accessories and should be proportional to body shape
and height.”

WEAR IT RIGHT:

“For the woman who says she doesn’t look good in hats … either she hasn’t
tried on enough styles to know what does look good on her, or she is
wearing the hat improperly. Many women can put any hat on their head
and look smashing, but some need to work at it to find a becoming
style: Wear the hat forward on the head; don’t wear the hat dead center
of your head, slightly cock it off to the side.”

HAIR: “If you have long hair, pull it back into a low bun or ponytail. Tuck shorter hair behind your ears. You want to keep the focus on your face and your hat.”

GLASSES:

“For women who wear glasses, lighter frames can be more selective in style
of hat, but heavier and darker colored frames will want to stay away
from larger and down-turned brims. A swept-back brim would be perfect,
and perhaps a short brim. Again, try on different styles with your
glasses to see what works for you!”

‘HATTITUDE’:

“Hattitude can certainly make any rules fly right out the window! The woman who
feels good in her hat and is not afraid to be seen in a hat, and enjoys
the attention a hat generates, can pretty much wear whatever she likes.
Hats can be an extension of your personality, allow you to create bold
new attitudes, or even give you a chance to go incognito. Hats are like
punctuation marks – they can be a declarative statement (a period), add
mystery and intrigue (a question mark), or show a playful, fun-filled
side (exclamation point).”

AT THE JERSEY SHORE

Talks with a Long Island accent. Smells like Axe body spray. Tan all over. Who Am I?

Why, of course it’s one of your favorite “guidos” from MTV’s show “Jersey Shore,”
which has become something of a cultural phenomenon ever since the
cameras started rolling in the crew’s Garden State party pad in Seaside
Heights, NJ.

As a Jersey girl myself growing up in South Jersey, I find it amusing
seeing how the rest of the country reacts to this seemingly fascinating
subculture.

In sixth grade, I started each morning perfecting my “pompadour”
spreading my bangs into three sections, rolling each section to the
side with my curling iron and making it sizzle with a few sprays of the
Aqua Net before teasing it to just the right height to warrant a
compliment from my BFF Desarea and subversive enough to drive my
parents nuts.  (Case in point: They swore they would cut if off
one night while I was sleeping…)

The difference lies in the age-old South Jersey vs. North Jersey
stereotypes. We spent a week every summer in the dry, family-oriented
Ocean City where my friends and I roamed the boardwalk meeting guys
like Tony from First Street. Although he made us swoon with his
signature greeting:  “Yo,” Tony was more of a skater / surfer type
than the “guidos and guidettes” you would find a little farther south
along the Jersey coast at say, Wildwood, South Jersey’s sole answer to
Seaside Heights.

Surprisingly enough, Jersey Shore style has generated its own brand of
guido and guidette-wannabes. Although my dad informed me that
“Snooki”got booed unmercifully at Philadelphia’s legendary “Wing Bowl”
(she responded by giving them all the finger: who cares when she’s
bringing in $10,000 for appearances, right?) there has been a group of
barbers buzzing about recent requests for Pauly D’s shellacked ‘do.

The American Heart Association’s Cape Fear Heart Ball, held February
13th at the Holiday Inn Resort in Wrightsville Beach, brought out a
crowd with big hearts and generous spirits, to raise funds to support
research and education on cardiovascular disease.

Guests hovered around Full Sail Photography’s
Photo Booth throughout the night in between bidding on the silent
auction items and hitting the dance floor to the sounds of The Four
Knights Band.

Style Girl took in the guests attire noting the appearance of the
season’s most sought-after trends from one-shoulder dresses, manicured
ruffles to fringe, feathers, statement necklaces and spectacular
sequins.

BEST DRESSED:

The evening’s title for “Best Dressed” goes to Betsy Von Biberstein, wearing a sequined floor-length strapless Marchesa gown and Slane & Slane fringe earrings from Cape Fear Jewelry. Who would have guessed there was a Marchesa in our midst!

Friday, February 5th, the New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC)
hosted the 5th Annual Red Dress Luncheon and Fashion Show at the
Wilmington Hilton benefiting women and
heart disease awareness at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC)
and in our community.

As part of the national “Heart
Disease Awareness Month” activities, this event, chaired by Sandy Best,
educates women about heart disease, currently the leading cause of
death among women. Emceed by Ms. Chelsea Cooley Altman, Miss USA 2005
and featured speaker Representative Becky Carney (D) Mecklenburg
County, The Red Dress Luncheon and Fashion Show proceeds are used to
fund
outreach activities and health screenings through the Coastal Care Van.

“Style Girl” Jess James

hosted a launch party to celebrate the re-branding of the “Fashion Fix”
e-zine at Odessa January 21st. Lindsay Waltz, owner of B Branded design firm, collaborated on the “look,” along with back-end wizard Michal Wisniowski. The party, attended by over 100 stylistas, featured a live performance by Wilmington’s favorite chanteuse Bibis Ellison , a customized “Fashion Fix” cake and event design by The Dessert Divas, a retro photo booth by Full Sail Photography, floral design by A Boxed Event and Foz of Z107.5’s “Foz in the Morning” as event emcee.

Anna Paquin, nominee for Best Performance by an Actress in True Blood, chose a dazzling sequined Stella McCartney dress with a daring neckline - perfect for “necking” with fiance and co-star Stephen Moyer.

Ruffles:

One of my all-time favorites of the night was a ruffled, powdered violet Valentino worn by Chloe Sevigny, winner for best performance by an actress in a Supporting Role in Big Love.

One-Shoulder:

Maggie Gyllenhaal, presenter and star of Crazy Heart, chose an origami-style RM by Roland Mouret pale coral textured organza gown while French actress Marion Cotillard chose a deep teal one-shoulder, silk Dior gown with peek-a-boo lingerie lace detailing (another trend for Spring).

And now, for the not-so-much…

Mariah Carey? A bit too overexposed. Great dress, but not on her. Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts bet on black. Aniston’s sexy slit held the attention of her date Gerard Butler but her roll-in-the-beach hair and expected pick is a bit bo-ring while Julie Roberts’ nothing-special wrap dress and messy hair looks more girl next door than Pretty Woman. Tea Leoni took the casual chic look a step too far wearing her husband’s day shirt with a strand of pearls.

No one can deny Sophia Loren looks AMAZING for her age (75!) but she had a bit of an accessory overload with her embellished gown, choker necklace, diamond earrings and tinted glasses.
