In anticipating the sizzle of a
mid-summer day, it becomes easier to skimp on the formalities of professional, work-appropriate attire. As dress codes loosen and unemployment rates rise, you start to wonder, “What is the modern-day
power suit?”

No matter whether you’re employed, seeking employment or working for yourself, it’s paramount never to underestimate the first impression.
If you’re going for an interview, do your research not only on the company and the job responsibilities, but find out what the work
environment is like. Do the associates click down the halls in designer heels or is everyday casual Friday?

Foz, host of Wilmington’s most popular radio show on Z107.5, shared, “On my first interview at a radio station, I came in all buttoned up wearing a suit and tie. My potential boss (not in a suit) took one look
at me and said, ‘You look like you’re trying to sell me something.’”

Since the goal of any interview is to sell yourself, the balance in dressing for success lies in not letting what you’re wearing distract from what you have to say. Don’t let your style outshine you.

Different style standards do apply based on your line of work. Classic pumps and a skirt suit are still the standard for a corporate interview
(read Refinery 29’s tips on what to wear)
whereas mixed prints or funky accessories worn by a graphic designer could be considered part of the “uniform” (and a positive sign of their creativity) by a potential client.

Whether you are preparing for an interview or an important meeting,
here’s a few tips on How to Keep Your Cool while still looking Stylish
and Professional:

* Pick out your outfit the night before and try everything on to make
sure you feel comfortable and confident.

* Watch your hemline and neckline. Practice sitting down and make sure
your skirt doesn’t ride too high and your top does not gape too low.

*Wear closed toe or peep-toe pumps.

* Keep your accessories minimal. Save your statement earrings for happy
hour and stick with more solid studs or smaller, delicate earrings.

* Choose well tailored pieces with neutral or subdued colors (with
perhaps a “pop” of a more saturated hue) that fit well and are
wrinkle-free.

* Make sure to select lightweight, breathable fabrics to keep you cool
under pressure.

* Keep your hair polished and out of your eyes and face. Try a low
ponytail or a bun.

* With makeup, less is more. Go for a fresh, natural look with neutral,
subdued colors on your eyes, cheeks and lips with a clear lipgloss.

* And don’t forget your most valuable accessory - you got it…

Last Friday, Monkee’s of Wilmington hosted the FASHION + FLASH Runway Show tented event at Lumina Station in honor of Alice + Olivia’s stop in Wilmington during their tour of the Southeast.

The A+O style team - Cleo, Molly and Diggy - arrived in style in their
retro Airstream and kick-started makeover madness, fashion + fun.
Makeover winners Kirsty Piper, Angie Fortuin and Lisa Nez were treated
to sparkling sequined Alice + Olivia outfits to rock the runway, along
with jewelry from S. Burke, hair cut, color and style from Lavish and makeup by Blush.

The fashion show, styled by “Style Girl” Jess James and Shannon Dunne of James + Dunne Styling, evoked a sexy, bohemian vibe inspired by Alice + Olivia’s retro 1970s  era Airstream capturing the troubadour spirit of a gypsy caravan. Lavish followed suit by adding layers of bed-head, Rapunzel locks offset
by a myriad of feathers while Blush gave the 14 head-turning models a
clean, fresh look with an electric pout. Monkee’s 30+ looks were
accessorized with additional statement pieces from Ziabird and REEDS Jewelers.

Paysage’s chandelier, leather chairs and whimsical quilts added panache to the tent while 19 Hundred and DJ Mitch Jones kept the well-dressed guests engaged with light bites and a little
Janis Joplin as the guests eagerly awaited the show. The 200+ guests
included not only Wilmington’s most stylish women from age 9 to 69 but
a fair share of men, including Architect Tilghman Herring,
who concluded, “Great fashion show - Beautiful women, clothes and
place, very enjoyable. Where else can a man look at pretty women and
when his wife observes him, she just smiles?” Gotta love it.

In celebration of those who possess great personal style and those who
appreciate it, I’m introducing a new segment into the “FASHION FIX” mix
called “Closet Confessions” where we explore the essence of a person by
taking an inside look at their closet, collections, memories and
favorite style musings.

I decided to start with one of my style inspirations, my 91-year-old
Nana, Anna Seaboldt. Due to her spunky nature, I fondly remember her telling us about the guy she “nailed over his head” with her high heel
after he tried getting fresh with her during her stint as a nanny in Brooklyn or the special cream blouse with gold cufflinks my grandfather
brought home for her during one of his trips abroad. And most memorably, her treasured mink cape she wore at her husband’s funeral
while her home was being robbed by a mobster and his girlfriend whom, she likes to add, ran off with her other fake mink.

As Alzheimer’s sets in, these memories have began to fade from my Nana’s conscious, but for a day, she slipped into one of her favorite
yellow knit suits, stepped inside her closet and tried her best to remember through the threads of time…

Stacey said in a recent interview with MTV.

It’s only fitting that as the Eighties staples: off-the-shoulder tops, lace fingerless gloves and flat lace-up boots, make their way on the must-have list this season, that the jelly bracelet not be left behind.

Arm Candy, anyone? I fondly remember my multi-colored jelly bracelet collection and wondering why all the older, “cool kids” (aka: Madonna, Ricky Shroeder) were so fond of interlocking their black ones.

Well, they’re back. Sort of. A new, clever reincarnation known as “Silly Bandz”
launched by Robert J. Croak, the 47-year-old founder of Brainchild
Products (BCP) based in Toledo, Ohio is selling out in over 18,000
stores nationwide. The difference is that these particular jelly bracelets are not just bracelets for wearing. When you take them off,
they morph into an elephant, a dove or even an umbrella. Even better - some of them glow in the dark. And soon enough, Croak will introduce a UV-activated beach pack that changes color when the temperature rises.

Instead of trading PB & J for a fluffernutter sandwich, kids are
trading a green seahorse for an orange guitar, a yellow giraffe for a
pink elephant - strategically growing their Silly Bandz collection.

Kids also apparently fling the Bandz, which were inspired by stretchy animal-shaped rubber bands Croak spotted at a trade show in China three years ago, resulting in Bandz bans in some schools around the country.

Kids and their moms (most notably Sarah Jessica Parker) aren’t the only
ones turned on to this trend. It seems, even rock stars are rocking the
Silly Bandz. At the Charlie Mars show in May at The Soapbox, as my friends and I got closer to the stage, Shannon (Dunne - of James + Dunne Styling
and mother of three) leaned in and shout-whispered, “Is he wearing a
Silly Bandz?”) Sure enough, next to his yellow Live Strong band, we
spotted a zig-zagged shaped red band. I asked and he responded, “Yeap.”
Not sure which animal, but I have a feeling Charlie’s glows in the
dark…

Croak, who has sold millions (a pack of 24 costs about $5), said recently in an interview with Business Week,
“All the right people like Silly Bandz. Everyone asks who my publicist
is. I don’t have one. We don’t advertise. All we do is viral marketing.
This is happening on its own.”

Since I’m still in the midst of planning the FASHION FIX’s Sex and the City
Premiere Party and women across the country are getting ready to see
their favorite foursome on the silver screen again, the question of the
week is still lingering in the air, “What are you going to wear?”

Whether you are channeling Carrie, Samantha, Miranda or Charlotte, chances are
you’ve considered some incarnation of a maxi dress - a sexy and drapey
number, a bohemian caftan style or even a belted shirtdress style.

In a recent interview with E!, Sarah Jessica Parker said that the long, maxi dress, or “Desert Chic” look would be one of the hottest trends from the Sex and the City The Movie 2.

As always, stylist extraordinaire Patricia Field meets the style challenge of dressing the stars in bold, dynamic color and sexy silhouettes while keeping the peace in Abu Dhabi.

Being that SJP was recently appointed Creative Director for Halston’s Heritage label (available in Wilmington at Beanie + Cecil), it’s only fitting that Carrie is seen in a variety of Halston Heritage dresses, including the “Iconic” pleated maxi in orange, which harkens back the disco days of Studio 54.

When you’re not heating up the dance floor, maxi dresses are also a great
choice to beat the heat during the day for a more breezy, bohemian
look. In order to exude maximum style in your maxi dress, keep the
following tips in mind:

• The maxi dress should not overwhelm your frame. Pick a style that has some flow to it, but that fits in all the right places.

• Since you are opting for a longer hemline, balance out the silhouette by showing some skin up top with a strapless style, off-the-shoulder or a peekabo lace t-back.

• Avoid too-clingy jersey fabrics that spotlight “problem areas.” And, remember to wear seamless undergarments.

• Accessorize.
  Add a few delicate long, layered necklaces, hammered bangles or a belt
  - low-slung for a a boho look or cinched for a more polished take.

• Simplify your beauty routine
  by sticking with minimal makeup and an effortless, slightly tousled
  hairstyle to complement the easy, breezy vibe of the maxi dress.
  Try a messy side braid or loose, low bun.

• The biggest style challenge with a maxi? Choosing the right pair of shoes. Typically,  flat sandals, gladiators or a chunky wedge platform look best.

• The hem should fall somewhere between your ankles and the top of your shoe. If your maxi is a bit short, try an espadrille style sandal to balance the silhouette.

• Avoid anything too glitzy. The dress length creates enough glamour on its own. Keep it simple & chic!
