Meet Casey Crespo, one of Wilmington’s fashion designers who will be featured at the March 7th Spring Fashion Preview event (Get Your Ticket Today!) famous for her sexy and amazingly comfortable leggings. Formerly a seamstress on One Tree Hill, read our interview below to see her latest design (a dress!) and find out one of Casey’s favorite style tricks she learned from her time on the show dressing the likes of Sophia Bush and Austin Nichols.

ff:When did you first learn to sew?

“When I was 11, my mom picked up a sewing machine off the side of the road for me and we had it serviced. I loved finding vintage fabrics at local thrift stores and turning them into one-of-a-kind pieces for myself. I would look at clothes to see how they were made and just go for it.”

ff: Who/what influenced you to become a fashion designer?

“I feel like I’ve always been drawn to it since I was young. When I was five, my dad worked for Catalina swimwear. He brought home a bag of swimsuit fabric scraps from the factory and I would play with it for hours, – even dressing my brother up in them!”

“In my early teenage years, I simply couldn’t find clothing that interested me enough to wear it. Also, I’ve always been pretty tall, and I could never find clothes long enough for me, so I just had to make
it. These two issues, combined with my desire to be extremely comfortable, still drive me to make clothes today. Every body is shaped differently. That’s why it’s important for me to offer custom
sizing through my
Etsy store. If I ever need inspiration, I go shopping, get frustrated with what’s
out there, and this frustration inspires me to make my own garments.”

ff:Please share one of your favorite memories working as a seamstress on One Tree Hill.

“The entire last day of filming was really special. The whole crew got together to watch the last scene being filmed. Sophia Bush, Austin Nichols, and the producers of the show said some heartfelt words, and there was an incredible sense of camaraderie that day.”

ff: How did your experience working on One Tree Hill influence your direction as a fashion designer?

“Working on One Tree Hill exposed me to so many clothing and wardrobe issues that I would not have been exposed to otherwise. Hearing so much feedback about the fit really gave me a sense of what makes someone feel good when they put a garment on.”

ff: Can you share one of the many little tricks you used to make the actors look their best on camera?

(see below for answer + more questions with Casey!)

Hair Stylist Cheryl Kent’s Hair-spirations

One flattering trick we used a lot was when we hemmed shirts, we used a scooped hem, like the hem of a baseball shirt. It just flows with the curves of the body better. I almost always use that hem when I design shirts now. ”

ff: How would you describe your design aesthetic?
“I like clean lines. Nothing too frilly. I don’t generally follow trends too closely. I don’t want someone to buy something and look at it a few years later and ask, ‘What was I thinking?’ I like garments that have style longevity. I also like a certain amount of simplicity, allowing the wearer to take their style in whatever direction they choose by their choice of accessories, shoes, etc. The fabrics I use are such a big part of my design. I’m very into micro modal (made from the pulp of the beechwood tree) right now because of its silky, luxurious drape.”

ff: What is your signature piece – would you say it’s your leggings?
What do you think sets them apart from the competition?
“Specifically, my Mesh Swirl leggings. I released them about a year ago and they

are still an essential part of my wardrobe. They are a well
fitting pair of black leggings with an interesting mesh cutout swirling
up the leg. The mesh makes them sexy but not in an obvious
way. I love how versatile they are; you can wear them in place of
your everyday black leggings for some added interest, or you can really
make them the focal point of your outfit. My favorite part of all
my leggings is the super comfortable high waistband. Almost no
woman is confident about their ‘spare tire’ area, so I’ve designed this
waistband without elastic to really smooth you out there.”

ff: Have you ever received feedback from a customer that really inspired you to move forward,
making you feel confident that you’re moving in the right direction?

“Every positive response I receive from customers inspires me to move forward. I especially love it when a customer sends a photo of themselves wearing my clothing, because it is always accompanied by a huge smile. And if they feel good in my clothes, then I know I did something right.”
ff: How do you think Wilmington has shaped your design aesthetic or personal goals as a designer?

“Wilmington has a very laid back, casual attitude about life because of our beaches and because its a vacation destination. My designs are quite possibly more casual because I live here.”

ff: What look from your collection are you most excited to wear this spring and how would you style it?

“I love dresses in the spring and summer. There’s no thought required; one garment and you’re dressed! I’m excited to wear my color blocked micro modal dress on a casual, everyday level. I would just layer on some jewelry and throw on some great sandals with it.”
