Mood Swings Lost & Found necklace $65
made from vintage eye glass lenses
Three years ago as I was perusing all the creatively reimagined pillows, recycled found object pendants and dazzling jewelry boxes at La La Land’s former shop in the Old Wilmington City Market (Lisa’s handmade gifts are now for sale at Ziabird), I picked up a postcard for the Raleigh-based event, The Handmade Market. I was instantly smitten with their punchy aesthetic and cheeky slogan:

This past weekend, I finally got to go. Shannon and I just so happened to be in town to do some wardrobe editing and shopping for a new Raleigh-based James + Dunne client. Just as we were setting off, I got a message from Kitty Kinnin, 100.7 The River’s uber-popular morning radio host, insisting that since we were going to be in town, we had to stop by The Handmade Market. You don’t have to tell me twice!

Now that the holidays are approaching, more and more people are thinking not only of shopping local (subscribe to the 3/50 project!), but they are seeking out meaningful, one-of-a-kind gifts. Nothing says heartfelt like handmade. Wilmington fiber artist Louise Giordano says, “Despite the recession, I’m happy to report that I’ve had my best month yet at Port City Pottery & Fine Crafts in the Cotton Exchange, where 20 local artists in pottery, fiber art, jewelry, gourd art, baskets, wood, and more show and sell their work.”

Cucalorus: Nov 11-15

Cucalorus, named one of the “Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals” by Moviemaker Magazine, is celebrating its 15th anniversary as an international film festival. Cucalorus provides a forum where film becomes a player in the social and political arena and offers a new voice for the South. Over 10,000 tickets were sold in 2008 and over 130 films will screen this week -
and talk about perfect weather to hit the theater!
If you don’t see anything else this week,
here’s two films you won’t want to miss:
PRECIOUS
www.weareallprecious.com

Set in Harlem in 1987, Claireese “Precious” Jones is a teenage African-American girl born into a life no one would want. She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father; at home, she must wait hand and foot on her mother, a poisonously angry woman who abuses Precious emotionally and physically. School is a place of chaos and Precious has reached the ninth grade with good marks and an awful secret: she can neither read or write. In the literacy workshop taught by the patient yet firm Ms. Rain, Precious begins a journey that will lead her from darkness, pain and powerlessness to light, love and self-determination.
PRECIOUS was an Official Selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and winner of three awards at the 2009 Sundance Festival.

TiMER
www.timerthemovie.com
What if a clock could count down to the moment you meet your soul mate? In this alternate version of present day Los Angeles, a revolutionary device called the TiMER fulfills this fantasy. For a reasonable installation fee and moderate monthly charges, a TiMER implanted in the wrist will accurately display the numbers of days, hours, minutes and seconds until the wearer’s date with destiny. Sounds awesome, right? Not if you’re Oona O’Leary (EMMA CAULFIELD, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). She faces the rare dilemma of a blank timer. Staring down the barrel of thirty and tired of waiting for her would-be partner, Oona breaks her own rules and falls for Mikey (JOHN PATRICK AMEDORI, Gossip Girl), a charming and much younger supermarket clerk with a countdown of four months. Only when Oona ignores the ticking clock can she finally experience the exhilarating and unpredictable thing called love.
