Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger circa 1970's
Growing up, I was the kind of friend you loved or loathed having around on your birthday – depending on how shy you were. From impromptu serenades to balloons and intercom announcements, most of the school knew whether you were a Scorpio or Sagittarius before you had a chance to blow out the candles.
In short, I guess you can say I’m a “birthday person.” But since I’ve long surpassed the sixteen candles, my enthusiasm is starting to wane (at least a little).
Considering my best friend – the one I played Barbies with, got grounded with and introduced me to my husband – is making the 12-hour trip down south to celebrate my birthday (it’s today), I figured I might as well celebrate in style, 70’s style, that is. Taking a cue from Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger circa 1974, we’re planning a disco dance party at Odessa Downtown, which just happens to be in the throes of its own makeover. Love the Nightlife? If you’d like to come out for a taste of Friday Night Fever, here’s a few tips on what to wear:
1) If you are in need of a 70’s fashion fix, head to Flashbax (at 30 North Front Street) immediately or try the “vintage room” at the Bargain Box.
2) Here’s the perfect excuse to try out your new jumpsuit! Add some gold chains, statement earrings and metallic shoes.
3) From maxi to mini, you can’t miss. For the uber-brave, there’s always hot pants.
4) For the guys, bell bottoms, polyester and platforms are in order. Add a fitted vest for some sex appeal. Tony Manero (aka: John Travolta), eat your heart out!
5) Make an appointment with your hair stylist for a sultry seventies ‘do a la Farrah Fawcett.
Le Freak, C’est Chic. See you on the dance floor!
