David Bowie Blues – A Fashion Legacy + Throwback Prom
unnamed

In this month’s Rolling Stone, writer David Fricke calls David Bowie’s new album Blackstar “one of the most aggressively experimental records the singer has ever made.”

Now that we’ve lost this star who shined so bright two days after his 69th birthday (also the release date for his new album), fans are united in tears listening to his parting words:

“Something happened on the day he died/Spirit rose a meter, then stepped aside,” Bowie sings with what sounds like ‘numbed grace.’

“Somebody else took his place and bravely cried: I’m a blackstar.”

While the world grappled with saying “goodbye” to such a transformative artist who made it cool to embrace your inner “freak,” a popular sentiment was shared —

“If you’re ever sad, just remember the world is 4.543 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie.”

In looking back on David Bowie’s life, it’s apparent that his legacy not only lives on through his words and his music but in the many phases of this original style chameleon.

From the mod space-age metallics of “Space Oddity” to the lightning flash face paint of Aladdin Sane to the oversize shoulders, white shirt collars and monochromatic suiting of “Thin White Duke” to the flame haired Ziggy Stardust, he “embodied the conviction that there was value in constant reinvention” wrote Vanessa Friedman in The New York Times article, “David Bowie’s Fashion Legacy.”

This was never more evident than over the past few days. With each heartfelt tribute, there was an accompanying Bowie image that told a completely different story than the one before it.

I’ve included a few of my favorite Bowie images above and below as well as Bowie-inspired looks on the runway, his “twinsie,” actress Tilda Swinton and Gucci’s latest collection and campaign which is not only loosely inspired by Bowie but is by far my favorite collection of the season.

Take heart in Bowie’s own promise:

“I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”
