Last week, model Sarah Elizabeth, Photographer Michael Deininger-Bell and FASHION FIX intern Danielle Dewar and myself set off with a mission in mind – to “winterize” one of my favorite summer staples – the J Brand red skinny jeans ($176) from Beanie + Cecil.

We started  off with a colorblock look  at Beanie + Cecil dictated by the two-toned, two-textured letterman jacket and added even more texture with the cheetah stiletto pump, smocked blouse and statement accessories.

Next, we decided to balance out the red at Personal Touch with an understated gray hue but kept it edgy with the low-slung shoulder, chunky buckle booties, Lionette bracelets for the magnet-closure-only arm party and a snakeskin clutch.

Last but not least, we decided to have some fun with vintage for a more eclectic look combining a faux fur trimmed capelet coat, an ethnic print blouse, a pearl embellished vest topped off with a fabulous feather hat – all for sale at A Second Time Around.

Since Academy Award winning actor Colin Firth and actress Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada) have come to town to film Arthur Newman, they have both been spotted dining at manna and solo at Harris Teeter (you may have passed Colin on your way to grab a new gallon of milk) while Emily spent some time shopping at Edge of Urge downtown.

I first heard of  her sighting at Edge of Urge via Michael Ussery’s Instagram photo (per last week’s FASHION FIX, you must get on Instagram pronto if you are not there already). Don’t they look cute together with their “geek-chic” glasses?

Michael said Emily was “ever so pleasant and unbelievably personable” while she shopped around the store trying on high-waisted Cheap Monday jeans, BLANK NYC, and Insight denim before trying several WILDFOX and For Love and Lemons oversized sweaters and tops.

“Finally, she sat down on our glittery ottomans, took off her shoes -
and no joke – tried on every pair of boots – never caring what label
they were, just the way they looked. She oogled over the Jeffrey
Campbells, getting a giggle about the shape and later admitting she
would love to wear a pair.”

First off, if you have an iPhone and haven’t gotten hooked on Instagram yet, what are you waiting for? I’ve heard Instagram described as “like Twitter, but updates are all visual.” I like to think of it as a photo diary I share through Earlybird tinted lenses – or perhaps Hefe?

Being a style girl and all, I especially like seeing Instagram photos tagged with fashion-minded hashtags like #whatimwearing and #fashiondiaries.


Insta-Trend #1: The Arm Party

Which leads me to our #1 insta-trend – “The Arm Party” a phrase coined by blogger Leandra Medine of Man Repeller, who is particularly fond of sharing her eclectic mix of bracelets aka “Arm Party.”  To give you a better idea of this infatuation with bracelets and bangles (the more, the better), there are 836 photos attached to the #armparty”  on Instagram as of 2:34am this morning.

Insta-Trend #2: The Collar

Since blouses and collars in particular are having a moment, I predict we will be seeing more and more embellished collars and buttoned-up collars adorned with statement necklaces on and off Instagram. This would make for the perfect DIY weekend project! Find a once-loved blouse and add some studs or a touch of whimsy by stitching a contrasting color.
