The Oscars countdown is on and you still haven’t gotten an invite as Leo’s plus one? Dang. Well, all I know – even without seeing The Revenant – is that he better be going home with Oscar!

The film biz may be down in Wilmywood, but lucky for us Cucalorus Film Festival is once again hosting their annual red carpet Oscars event at Screen Gems Studio Sunday February 28th at 7:30pm – and even adding a few sealed envelopes of their own.

You can expect the usual – watching the show on giant screens, red carpet paparazzi, hors d’oeuvres and craft “Cuc-tails” (named after the best picture nominees) and of course, Cucalorus shenanigans. The new addition happens during commerical breaks where Cucalorus will announce the recipients of the first ever ‘Filmed in NC Fund’ grants, an initiative of the Cucalorus Film Foundation and the NC Film Office to support indie filmmakers in the state.

Nine projects ranging from narrative features to short animated docs were chosen from 61 submissions with funding support for six female directors and three projects from African American filmmakers. Filmmakers from many of the selected projects will be on hand to accept their awards and answer questions about their upcoming projects.

Besides Leo, Cucalorus Executive Director Dan Brawleys says, “Cucalorus has a hardcore crush on Brie Larson so she should just win half the Oscars. The other half should go to all the filmmakers and actors of color who have been essentially erased from the stage. Richard Pryor was talking about this in 1977. It’s time for a big wake-up. I can’t wait to see if anyone on the stage has anything to add to the conversation.”

The Cucalorus awards offer a direct contrast to the controversy surrounding the all-white Oscars as the award winners for the Filmed in NC fund represent the diverse face of North Carolina filmmakers.

“This is where the shift really has to take place. We’ve got to cultivate diverse talent. And many of these artists have projects worthy of the Academy’s attention, so we won’t be surprised when our grant recipients start showing up there. And they will,” promises Dan.

Two films that previously screened at Cucalorus have been nominated this year: Anomalisa and The Look of Silence. Both took the coveted “Secret Screening” slot on the festival’s closing night in 2015 and 2014 respectively. More than 20 Cucalorus films have received Oscar noms since the festival’s founding in 1994, including films like War/Dance, Burma VJ, The Act of Killing, Dogtooth, and Two Soldiers.

Now that you are jonesing to go, all you need now is just the right dress to make your red carpet entrance memorable. I got you! Call me at 910.538.5657 to set up a time to visit Style Girl Vintage (at 21 Market Street 2nd floor) to try on these incredible head-turning dresses in our Style Story below.

When I asked Dan what he was thinking for his red carpet attire, he replied: “I’m predicting cloudy with a 40% chance of pants. Shoes are likely to be shiny and I’m guessing I’ll wear some kind of vest that shows off my taco meat and maybe a coat with some bells and whistles. I think more clothes should make noise.”

Riiiiiight. You heard the man. Make some noise on the red carpet!

Tickets are $100 each and available at www.cucalorus.org, with proceeds supporting one of the “25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World” (MovieMaker Magazine). This past year on its 21st anniversary, Cucalorus expanded its programming with Cucalorus CONNECT, a conference celebrating innovation and entrepreneurship, tech startups and venture capital. Accumulated attendance reached 17,630 with more than 150 events held over five days in November. The 22nd Annual Festival will run November 9 – 13.
