Adventures in Austin
My first visit to Austin was a spontaneous one in March 2012 with Gay Adair to take in some music during SXSW. One of my best friends (Helen Howell Priest) moved to Austin in July after spending 3 years in South Korea so it was only a matter of time for a return visit.
One day, my friend Stella (who was temporarily living in Austin during my 2012 SX visit) called to see if I would be down for house/cat sitting at her friend’s condo in Austin in March.
I am soooo there!
Since Helen and I both sell vintage clothing (Style Girl Vintage + Reverie Vintage) we thought it best to mix business with pleasure and try to set up to sell at a pop-up market while in town. We signed on as featured sellers for a SX Showcase party / pop-up at Hotel Vegas. Let’s just say packing was TRICKY (and ridiculously heavy!)
We made the most of the beautiful days frolicking at Krause Springs, state parks, Zilker Park and even took out kayaks on the river by our condo (but not before battling a scorpion!)
We ate breakfast tacos, late-night tacos and more tacos on-the-go from various food trucks, finally tasted my first avocado marguerita (delicious!) and nursed our hangovers on Helen’s friend’s boat before giving in to a food coma at Jacoby’s (best meal of our trip).
On our four rainy days, I dragged Stella from vintage shop to thrfit store to antique shop finally meeting the store owners I’ve “known” for years via Instagram. I even won a pair of Thierry Lasry sunglasses (handmade in France) at a party we attended at my favorite Austin vintage shop, Garment Modern. We were also greeted with open arms by Shari, the owner at Charm School Vintage who invited me to host a Style Swap at her shop years ago. Stella took home a dazzling white sequin duster and I now own the cutest vintage pin-up swimsuit you ever did see. I even found took home a little piece of Austin for Joel in the form of some cosmic starwater formulated by locally owned La Abeja Herbs.
We got initiated on Dirty 6th by dancing non-stop into the early hours of the morning at Barberella’s Funk/Soul night (Thursday special) and eventually made ourselves at home on the Eastside showing up nightly at The Eastside Showroom, Hotel Vegas and our favorite honky tonk bar, The White Horse.
Each time we heard, “Back again?” we had to smile.
We two-stepped with the best of them (after watching from the sidelines several nights) and rubbed elbows with legendary musicians at The Continental Club.
We saw cowboys riding off into the freeway and a topless woman strolling the streets at dusk all in the spirit of keeping Austin weird. And, I even met my Instagram crush. Swooooon.
Oh Austin, we do love you!

Helen and I loaded up our vintage like mules after picnic-ing at Pedernales State Park outside Austin. We hiked up the rocks until we found a secluded spot to change into one another’s vintage. It was only then we realized how hot & non-model(y) we had become! We persevered and found a few magical settings to photograph a few of our favorite things from both Style Girl Vintage and Reverie Vintage.

Cucalorus Annual OSCARS Party
@ Screen Gems Studio
This annual red carpet fundraising event for the Film Festival that Could featured giant screens to watch Leo finally take home his Oscar, red carpet paparazzi (SABEN, yes!), hors d’oeuvres and craft “Cuc-tails” (named after the best picture nominees) and of course, Cucalorus shenanigans. During commerical breaks, Cucalorus annouced recipients of the first ever ‘Filmed in NC Fund’ grants, an initiative of the Cucalorus Film Foundation and the NC Film Office to support indie filmmakers in the state. Style Girl Vintage also had the chance to select the “Best Dressed” in attendance (fun!)

Downton Farewell Soiree

@ The Vintage Marketplace
Joel calls us the “Vintage Die-Hards” who showed up & turned out for the first Downton Farewell Soiree during the “tornado” on a Wednesday night. We had so much fun at this “dress rehearsal” event that we decided we must have a Part II on Saturday. Hosts Janie Perry of The Vintage Marketplace, Jess James of Style Girl Vintage and Joan Denning Smith of Elizabeth’s Tres Chic encouraged friends & guests to channel their favorite Downton Abbey characters. The event featured a high tea service, delicious chocolate shortbread, Bakla-vavoom from Kathy Rayle, fortune telling by Susan & of course, vintage treasures.
