A Second Time Around says “Goodbye” to Downtown Wilmington
front

Meredith McCahan, owner of A Second Time Around

Whenever I pass the colorful sale racks brimming with vintage in front of A Second Time Around at 143 North Front Street, I start to smile. I make my way through the glass door. The bell chimes and I hear a familiar voice greeting me. I see the top of head and an enthusiastic hand waving behind another pile of vintage, and I immediately feel the familar wave of anticipation before the thrill of the hunt begins.

For someone who loves vintage as much as I do, walking through the doors of A Second Time Around is something like coming home. Or at least, my retail version of Cheers.

“Sometimes you wanna go, where everybody knows your na-ame. And they’re always glad you ca-aame!”

Since I have been working with A Second Time Around owner Meredith McCahan and her staff the past seven years (doing events, marketing, the ASTA Facebook page, etc), I am sometimes even greeted (by Amanda instead of Woody, wink) with a glass of wine. My chances greatly increase if it’s a Friday afternoon and they happen to be playing some good throwback Michael Jackson.

So, needless to say it’s with a heavy heart that I have to break the news to you dear readers that after 13 years, A Second Time Around is leaving Downtown Wilmington. Before you break out the tissues, hold tight for the good news – they are just moving (NOT closing) to a new location: 3518 Wrightsville Avenue – in a commerical zoned cottage Meredith purchased (by Protocol).

It’s time to put on your ‪‎vintage‬ party frock! To celebrate their new Wrightsville Avenue store (opening April) and to say “goodbye” to their Front Street shop, A Second Time Around is hosting their first & last party at their Front Street location Friday Jan 29th 6pm-9pm. And, wear something FESTIVE !

A Second Time Around opened in 2002 in Cape Fear Beer & Wine’s location. Meredith took over the business in 2004, and moved into the current 4,000 square space in February 2015.

At first the cavernous space felt more like a warehouse until Meredith and her staff filled it with merchandise and fixtures, decorative vintage hat boxes, old fashioned mannequins and chandeliers. “It wasn’t an intimate, boutique-y place like I originally wanted, but I think we still succeeded in making customers walk in and think ‘What a great treasure hunt this is going to be!’”

Many have reveled in the thrill of the hunt after walking through those same glass doors – including an array of costume designers and actors. “Craig Sheffer from One Tree Hill found his way here early on and bought a large full-length women’s fur coat to keep him warm at Sundance. He must have told his co-workers about us because a few days later, Sophia Bush came in and purchased three fur coats!”

The size of their space has made it easy to carry a vast variety of eras and sizes for those on the hunt but Meredith says, “It really is an incredibly large space and it takes A LOT of work. You practically need an army to run it! And, the overhead is tremendous. Over the last few years, I decided I wanted to become more strategic and work smarter, not harder.”

Moving her elderly father to Wilmington to care for him and spend more time together was what initially prompted Meredith to start downsizing and looking at cutting costs. With a new landlord and rent increase, it got her thinking about her original dream of a more intimate boutique. She attempted to stay downtown by seriously looking at several storefronts on Castle Street, but in the end, she and her husband ultimately wanted to make an investment and own their next retail location.

Their Wrightsville Avenue location, a 1,400 square foot 1940’s cottage with a front porch, backyard and two fireplaces, is slated to open in April/May. Meredith is still going to focus on vintage clothing & accessories (they have held aside some of their favorite pieces for their grand opening), but they are adding a second business to the mix called “The Posh Peasant,” a collection of vintage barware, home decor, etc.

She hopes her new mid-town location will encourage some new clients who love and respect vintage. As much as Meredith loves downtown, she says the store had become at times a “playground” for folks to play dress-up and many times, destroy clothing in the process.

But alas, it’s still a bittersweet goodbye. “We will miss our friends downtown, being a part of the downtown scene and the summer tourists. Quite a few people have come in upon hearing the news to lament the passing of our shop windows. They had become sort of our calling card.”

From now until their closing downtown, A Second Time Around is hosting a MAJOR sale you won’t want to miss:

60% off all men’s & women’s vintage clothing, accessories & jewelry (over $20) 50% off vintage fur BAG SALE – Fill your bag of vintage for only $25!

If visiting A Second Time Around is kind of like your CHEERS (come on, it’s cheaper than therapy!) or you have yet to come, your last chance is their Closing Party / Sale Friday January 29th from 6-9pm. See you there. Woody will be serving wine! xo
