Gucci Inspired Style Story + That 70’s (FASHION) Show

As soon as I saw designer Alessandro Michele’s Spring/Summer collection for GUCCI, I was mesmerized by the lace, lurex knits, brocade, satin bomber jackets, geek chic accessories and an overall celebration of VINTAGE all wrapped up in a grosgrain bow. FINALLY, something in this what-comes-around-goes-around carousel ride called FASHION to be excited about (again).

The quirky, eclectic styling, lush textures and 70’s disco darling meets sexy librarian had me hooked. One day after a particularly inspiring Gucci gush session with my friend Marthe, I had an idea. Instead of doing my usual bi-annual Fashion Preview event, let’s have a Gucci inspired fashion show with a heavy 70’s influence and host the runway show at the roller rink. What other place holds more 70’s nostalgia than your childhood roller rink, riiiiight?

And that, my friends, was how That 70’s (FASHION) show – coming to Wilmington Thursday May 12th at Scooter’s Roller Rink and presented by Simply Noelle – came to be.

Long before the fashion show planning began, I had to convince my incredibly talented friend, Photographer Lisa Brown (of Bella Rose Photography), that we simply MUST do our own take on this vintage renaissance. Luckily, she too was smitten with the new Gucci. So three months ago, we gathered a few gorgeous models (two first-timers – bet you can’t guess who!), Makeup Artist Amy Kennison, Hannah from Beauty Bar, and — our Moms! — as our “assistants,” surrounded by a plethora of 70’s vintage at the Style Girl Vintage showroom (and borrowed vintage Gucci from Legare Simpson – thank you, Legare!) for a shoot in Downtown Wilmington.

My mom kept a steady hum, asked a million questions and kept the clothes organized while Lisa’s mom (who even brought walkie-talkies!) pulled up in front of 21 Market in her mini van – with chocolate chip cookies, naturally! – to transport us from one shoot location to another.

Like Sly sang in 1971, “It’s a family affair!”

Since this shoot took place almost several months ago, quite a few of the featured pieces from Style Girl Vintage have found new homes so I will caption only the items that are still up for grabs. I’m hosting a Cinco de Seventies Shopping Fiesta Thursday May 5th 6-9pm at Style Girl Vintage. Please come take a look at my new Gucci inspired 70’s pieces – just in time for That 70’s (FASHION) Show!

Wishing you all good vibes for a fun weekend.
Thank you for reading.

Preparing something special with Legare of A Ribbon Runs Through It inside Scooter’s Roller Rink – isn’t it AMAZING?!

As Fashion Editor for Focus on the Coast and producing countless fashion shows & events, I guess you can say I’ve been “discovering” Wilmington models since 2006

We have incredibly gorgeous models lined up for That 70’s (FASHION) Show. Can’t wait to see how Beauty Bar Boutique transforms them into disco queens & Bowies! I will be sharing our models on the event page leading up to the show so please follow along. Figured I would start with a brand-new face. Introducing Kaye

“Discovered” at Wine, Women & Shoes. New to Jacksonville, NC.

Have you discovered Rummy Vintage yet? Beth has some amazing 70’s you will want to shop both before + AT the fashion show! Follow along at @rummyvintage on Instagram for a first look at her new arrivals. Here’s a few of my faves that would be PERFECT for May 12th!

FYI: Fashion Show attendees are not required to dress a la 70’s / Gucci inspired but wouldn’t it be more fun if you are?!

Charleston iPhone case designer @stonedbystone has created a custom case just for That 70’s (FASHION) Show’s “best dressed” winner. I found this vintage GUCCI button and she is adding it (bottom left).
Best of luck, darlings! Xo
