Finding GATSBY on BHI + The White Party at SGV this Thursday
unnamed

Zelda & Scott Fitzgerald vibes on the Bald Head Island Ferry
headed to The Shoals Club GATSBY AFFAIR

Just as Gatsby has yet to woo Daisy, this gal hasn’t tired of Gatsby’s parties quite yet. Sadly, the Jazz Age Lawn Party’s 10 year anniversary in NYC lost out to our Southern road trip adventures this summer, but we did have the pleasure of attending the Shoals Club’s GATSBY AFFAIR on Bald Head Island over Labor Day weekend. Come along with Joel and I as we relive our date night in 1925. The time travel started on the ferry to Bald Head where Joel took notes for his novel in his moleskin journal while I read my new book, “FLAPPERS: Six Women of a Dangerous Generation” by Judith Mackrell.

Since I was warned the gala might be more casual (island time and all) than my annual Great Gatsby Gala I hosted the past four years, I opted for an authentic 1920’s cream fringed dress and cherished hand-painted peach kimono dripping with deco accessories.

Fellow passengers wearing flip flops, t-shirts and an amused smile exclaimed, “I just love your costume!” Hmmm, nice…crocs? (Hint: There is a MA-JOR difference between wearing authentic period attire vs. a costume from Halloween Adventure.)

The anticipation began to build as soon as Joel’s spectators hit the floor of the tram. The sky started to blush, making us thirsty for a Pink Lady cocktail (gin, grenadine and egg white). The first flapper we encountered as we made our entrace at The Shoals Club announced, “Daisy has arrived!” and guided us to the champagne fountain with a view of a pergola dressed in a sheer white linen whipping in the wind and three dazzling chandeliers.

With a soundtrack of the sea mixed with Wilmington’s Big Band, an endless supply of delicious food and a nod to the glamorous spirit of the times, Woody and his staff at The Shoals Club prepared an enchanting evening in a truly magical setting. A lot of you asked (via Facebook), what I thought of the attire. Let’s just say our Wilmington Gatsby guests set a very high bar, indeed.

But, those Art Deco Society folks in Richmond, VA – now, they don’t mess around. Joel and I just celebrated our anniversary (for the second time) by attending the annual Gatsby Afternoon Picnic (coverage coming next week) and I can promise you outfit & picnic inspiration x 100 for Wilmington’s first Gatsby Lawn Party!
